Erik grew up in Huntington, NY, and has made a name for himself in sailboat racing on his home waters of Long Island Sound and beyond. His first introduction to the sport was aboard his family's Ericson 39 Jonrob. At age seven, Erik began on his own through the learn-to-sail program at Centerport Yacht Club. At age ten, Erik would travel to his first national and continental championships in the Optimist Dinghy.
Racing in the Optimist, Erik amassed a North American Championship win, was twice a member of the US teams at each the European, South American, and World Championships. Moving on from the Optimist, Erik raced the Club 420 in which he won both the U.S. Youth Championship and the U.S. Youth Double-Handed Championship for the Bemis Trophy as skipper. Traveling abroad once more, Erik competed in the International 420 World Championships hosted in Hayling Island, England in 2003. Having only sailed an older I-420 a few times, he and his crew were able to learn as they went to qualify for Gold Fleet and eventually place 27th overall.
Erik attended Dartmouth College where he graduated with a B.A. in Economics in June of 2007. Prior to graduating, Erik was once an Honorable Mention All-American and three time All-American skipper, twice being named a finalist for College Sailor of the Year. The Big Green won two Atlantic Coast Championships, one New England Dinghy Championship, two New England Team Racing Championships, and qualified for seven of eight possible ICSA Spring National Championships all while Erik was an integral player. The team finished near the top in a multitude of those championships.
Outside the arena of dinghy sailing, Erik competes in distance races and small one-design keelboats whenever he can. He has sailed in two Newport to Bermuda Races, both times as a part of third-place efforts. Aboard his father's J80, Rumor, Erik has skippered to a win at Key West Race Week and an eighth place World Championship finish.
After college, Erik began sailing the 49er more frequently. The boat offered a platform of sailing new to Erik, and he relished the challenge. He competed in the Olympic Trials for the 2008 Games with his brother John as crew. The two earned a respectable 6th place finish.
The skipper of the Storck/Moore duo hopes to continue sailing in as many arenas as he can, though he is excited to put all of his efforts into going for the gold in the 49er in 2012. He is confident that with enough hard work he and Trevor will be able to make a grand entrance onto the Olympic sailing stage.
